Antigua is an island in the West Indies and is one of the Leeward islands in the Caribbean. The Leeward islands are located where the Northeastern Caribbean Sea meets the Western Atlantic Ocean. Actually the island was named Antigua by Christopher Columbus in 1493 after the Virgin of the Old Cathedral which is in Sevilla Spain. Being located on major sailing routes Great Britain came to view Antigua as their gateway to the Caribbean. Like many other Caribbean islands the major crop became sugar in the latter part of the 1600's. It was so successful that many tobacco farmers changed to sugar cane. Like the other Caribbean islands using the plantation system along with slave labor enabled Antigua to be very successful in sugar production. In 1968 Antigua along with Barbuda became an associated state of Great Britain and in 1981 they disassociated from the commonwealth. Antigua is world renown for its beautiful beaches. They are said to have 365 beaches one for every day of the year. The majority are located on the Caribbean side of the island where the waters are generally very calm. The beautiful waters of the Caribbean off Antigua We enjoy spending the day of a catamaran sailing to several different beautiful beaches with swimming, sunning and time on each beach. After we enjoyed the second beach the crew serves a wonderful lunch consisting of grilled lobster with champagne, and of course there's plenty of rum punch. Our grilled lobster and champagne lunch The happy couple enjoying the beautiful beaches of Antigua The famous Hawksbill Rock Hawksbill rock located just off of a bay by the same name is a famous landmark or should I say Sea mark in Antigua. There is a resort on the beach there and actually 3 other beaches are on this bay.
Spending the day on a catamaran sailing to beautiful and peaceful beaches is an absolutely wonderful and relaxing adventure while visiting Antigua.
