Around Santa Fe within a few hours in all directions are areas well worth visiting. First of all we flew in to Albuquerque, which has so much to offer that it will be the subject of a future posting. After renting a car we headed to Santa Fe along the Turquoise trail rather than using the interstate highway. We were not in a hurry and wanted go back into history for a bit. Along the trail are several old mining towns. We decided to start out driving up to the summit of Sandia Peak. The Sandia mountain range is located just east of Albuquerque. Actually there is a tram that goes up to the summit but we decided to drive up instead. Due to various wild fires in California smoke had moved south east and actually was affecting visibility in New Mexico. Once we made it to the top of the drive our view of the surrounding valley was disappointing due to the smoke. The 2 images immediately below were taken from our plane before we landed. Image of the poor visibility due to the California Wild Fires We got back on the Turquoise trail and headed north. As you can imagine the scenery was quite beautiful.
