Our 7 days on Crete was an absolutely wonderful re-introduction to Greek cuisine. The resort we stayed at had wonderful food and many options to choose from so if you chose to you never had to leave the resort. We however chose to leave the resort from time to time to explore much of what Crete had to offer, including the food. We found a number of restaurants and small eateries that are well worth trying. Taverna Onisimos located way off the beaten track in Peza Tomatoes with cheese bruschetta and Dolmades or Grape Leaves stuffed with cheese Our meal was served family style and we all shared everything. We also were served fried eggplant, potato fries, lamb and finally several different desserts. Everything was absolutely YUM. Taverna Onisimos is located in the town of Peza which is not really a haven for tourists but the food was quite excellent and definitely worth trying if you find yourself in the area. We tried a restaurant in Malia that was right on the beach. Elia's was well rated in TripAdvisor so we made a point of trying it. We shared their Saganaki and Zucchini balls for starters. My wife had the Sea Bass and I had the Vegetable Risotto. Everything was really excellent. They brought us some Rakomelo for an after dinner digestive. Elia's is definitely worth having a meal at. We asked to be seated in their upper level for the view and we weren't disappointed. Several views from our table at Elia's We spent one day walking around the Old Town of Chania. We ate right on the waterfront at Arismari Cretan Creative Cuisine and it definitely lived up to it's rating in TripAdvisor. After starting with an Aperol Shpritz we decided to share 4 starters. We got the Dolmades which is grape leaves wrapped over cheese, Seafood in a pastry with a cream sauce, Salty Crete fried cheese wrapped with poppy seeds and sunflower seeds with a tomato marmalade and finally Spinach and cheese pies. We definitely ordered one to many, but everything was really great. Arismari Cretan Creative Cuisine is absolutely a taverna not to be missed. Our last full day on Crete we explored the neighboring town of Stalis. We read about a "fast food" place that was very well rated and so we decided to have lunch there. It's called Chippy's Fast Food & Grill. We made it there a little early so we just checked out the beach area and did some shopping. By all appearences it resembled a classic sub shop almost anywhere in the USA but their menu was quite large and interesting. They serve salads, sandwiches, all kinds of burgers and of course Gyro's. They also serve a variety of dessert crepes and waffles. Being in Greece we naturally went with their Gyro's. My wife got chicken and I got pork. They use an interesting mix of seasonings which really added to the overall taste. And of course they come with fries only they are mixed in with the Gyro's. Our lunch was absolutely YUM and along with our drinks came to less than 10 euros. As their menu states, We don't serve fast food, we serve Good fast food! And they really do. The Chicken Gyro Parasailing in Stalis There are so many more restaurants and tavernas to try but this is my list for now. As I stated earlier in this post the resort we were staying at had about 7 different venues as options to dine. Next trip back to Crete we will try new places so we can add more to this list.
