Barbados was colonized by the British early in the 1600's and by 1650 was the largest grower of sugar cane and producer of sugar in the known world. This was accomplished by going to the plantation system and using slave labor. The citizens gained the right to vote in 1943 and independence from Great Britain in 1966. Outside of England Barbados has the oldest Parliamentary government. Having more than 60 beautiful white and sandy beaches Barbados is a perfect getaway for all kinds of beach and water sports. The beaches with the calm and tranquil waters are on the west coast of Barbados while the beaches on the east coast with the trade winds is far more suited for walking rather than swimming. My favorite thing to do on Barbados is to go snorkeling with large sea turtles. As slow and cumbersome as they are on land, in the water they are graceful and can swim quite fast if desired. They remind me of a bird in flight. They move and maneuver like birds flying. It absolutely amazes me how elegant and graceful they are under water. They elongate their head and neck in a straight forth manner to make themselves more aerodynamic. They use their front flippers like wings for propulsion and also position them like wings to increase lift. Their rear flippers act as their rudder and while turning they position their bodies like a bird or a plane rolls while turning. I was swimming around and lost sight of this one and suddenly looked straight down and saw it right below me, although a lot deeper than I thought as I tried to gently touch its back and wasn't close to it. It was just drifting along with the gentle current. Notice how its front flippers are positioned like a wing or airfoil as if it was a bird just drifting through the air. After we had our time swimming with the turtles we returned to the boat to head to a beach for some time ashore. On the way the crew began serving rum punch. I've tried rum punch on many Caribbean islands and have always favored the punch on Barbados. Their recipe is quite simple. One part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong and four part week. The sour is lime juice, the sweet is simple syrup, the strong is Barbadian dark rum and the weak is water or a fruit punch. Mix all ingredients together and add a dash of Angostura bitters and freshly grated nutmeg. Serve over ice and you're on you way.
