Santa Fe is well established as a world class center for art. One of the most famous and celebrated artists who's paintings of New Mexico landscapes are known and appreciated all over the world is Georgia O'Keeffe. In the historic part of Santa Fe there is a museum dedicated to her work that will be a subject of another post, but seeing Ghost Ranch, the place that inspired her work was truly amazing. Located about 65 miles northwest of Santa Fe in the village of Abiquiu is Ghost Ranch. It's more than 21,000 acres in 1976 was declared a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. Ghost Ranch was not only Georgia O'Keeffe's home but also the inspiration and subject of many of her paintings. In 1935 Ghost Ranch was sold to Arthur Pack a wealthy and influential writer, publisher and environmentalist. Pack passed ownership of the Ranch to the Presbyterian church who agreed to maintain the Ranch and use it as a retreat and educational facility. Georgia O'Keeffe became interested in seeing Ghost Ranch after reading what Arthur Pack wrote about it. She loved the landscape's geography so much she divided her time living in New York and Ghost Ranch. Incredible scenery and beautiful colors we saw on the drive to Ghost Ranch Cerro Pedernal was the subject of many of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings Images inside of Ghost Ranch Georgia O'Keeffe's inspiration Ghost Ranch has also been the site where numerous movies were shot The happy couple enjoying the incredible landscapes Ghost Ranch offers a wide variety of tours and programs for visitors there for the day, as we were or those who choose to spend several days or more staying at the Ranch's retreat. The beauty and serenity of Ghost Ranch may not have inspired me the way it did Georgia O'Keeffe but one can't help walking away with a real appreciation for what mother nature can achieve. Saying goodbye to Ghost Ranch
