Fira is the capital of Santorini and also the biggest town on the island. It is a highly cultured and sophisticated town. Located in the center of the island on the west side facing the Caldera visitors and locals are presented with breath taking views. Fira is a multitude of interesting shops, restaurants, cafes, tavernas, bars, museums and churches. Its a beautiful place to explore and enjoy. Franco's is a classic and well known bar on the main pedestrian street All kinds of shops are open and ready for tourists Santorini is a very popular port of call for cruise ships I've wondered for a while now about the town's name. I've heard it called Fira and also Thira. Apparently Thira is the ancient name of Santorini and its capital is Fira. I'm so glad that mystery has been solved. The cable cars on the left above is not the only way up from the port. There is a walking path which is a series of switch backs going up the side of the cliff. You can either walk it or take a ride on a donkey up the path, of course for a price. Two beautiful churches to worship in Fira The restaurants in Fira offer such a variety of traditional Greek cuisine. Here's a sample of some of the magnificent food we had. My special thanks to my favorite restaurant in Fira, Argo's where everything was absolutely YUM. We continued our exploration and walked along the cliff side path to Imerovigli. The views and scenery just kept getting better throughout our walking. Actually the walking path goes all the way to Oia. The total distance of the path from Fira to Oia is about 10 km which is about 6 1/2 miles. More images of Fira including sunset The beautiful and cosmopolitan town of Fira is a great place to visit whether during the daytime to shop, eat and absolutely people watch or at night to let loose after dinner at one of the many bars or clubs but is an absolute must visit.
