Located on the main road about 7 & 1/2 miles inland from Naxos Town you come upon the Bazeos Tower. Possessing a commanding view of the surrounding countryside the tower actually dates back to the 17th century. Its design is similar to most monuments of that time period due to the historic conditions in the post Byzantine period. The location for the tower was chosen to offer protection for the local people because of the frequent raids by pirates and also due to the feudal system that began during the Venetian rule and continued during the Ottoman period of rule. The tower initially served as a monastery but in the early 19th century it was abandoned by the monks and became the property of the Greek state. Towards the end of the century it was sold to the Bazeos family, a wealthy family of Venetian descent. They used it as their summer home and the tower is still owned by their descendants. The current owner decided to renovate the tower and use it as a venue for cultural events. Since 2001 the Naxos Summer Festival is held there where contemporary works of art are displayed.
