Considered a subregion of North America the roughly 700 islands make up the area known as the Caribbean. It is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the US mainland, north of South America and east of Central America. The islands are arranged in a number of archipelago's and distinguish the northern, eastern, southern and western regions of the Caribbean sea. The islands are a mixture of independent states, sovereign regions outside of the countries mainland, and dependencies. Some of the islands are relatively flat in topography such as Antigua and the Cayman Islands while many others are very mountainous is make up. The climate is either tropical or subtropical. Their economies hundreds of years ago were dependent mostly on sugar cane and salt while present day they depend on tourism. Many of the islands are destinations of major cruise lines and they have also developed their own individual appeal as holiday hot spots.
