Dating back to around 530 BC a temple constructed entirely of Marble was erected and dedicated to Demeter who was the goddess of cereal grain. The dedication to a deity being related to fertility of the soil was a logical conclusion since the temple is located in an area known for its rich farming land. Its design went on to become an important development of classic Greek architecture. The temple was later improved during the Roman period but in the Paleo-Christian period between the 5th and 6th centuries AD it was mostly demolished and rebuilt into a Basilica with 3 naves using the same marble blocks and stones.
